Scheduling 101

Seniors give advice on scheduling

Scheduling+101

The school days might feel like they’re moving in slow motion, but it’s already time to schedule classes for next year.

Enrollment forms for the 2022-23 school year were due Feb. 25 and there’s a lot to consider before submitting the sheet to your advisory teacher.

Fortunately, counselors and teachers are here to help.

Counselors will be available during lunch to answer any scheduling questions. Teachers are also open to answering any questions students might have, and they can be especially helpful if they teach the class you have a question about.

Still, sometimes the most beneficial advice is from the viewpoint of the people who know firsthand what the classes were like.

That’s where the seniors come in. They know which classes were enjoyable, which classes they learned a lot from and which ones they regret taking.

First, the decision to take advanced classes can be stressful.

Senior Nahlia Moncrief had some advice for students when it comes to taking those advanced classes.

“If you see yourself going down a particular path, take AP classes that interest you,” Moncrief said. “It’s a lot of hard college work if you’re not interested, plus it shows colleges you’re interested in a particular subject matter.”

Moncrief said the one that stood out the most to her was AP Language & Composition.

“Students got rewarded for being creative and nuanced with your thoughts,” Moncrief said. “I enjoyed that there was more freedom in that class than in the previous English classes I’ve taken.”

Senior Nikitha Hadya said not overloading yourself with tons of advanced classes is important as well.

“I recommend taking one or two AP classes per year so that you can really enjoy what you’re learning in those classes,” Hadya said.

There are also a few openings in a schedule that can be filled with electives, ranging from Accounting to Dance.

“I was really able to hone in on one particular interest that I wouldn’t have been able to fulfill in a conventional school class,” Moncrief said.

She has taken many electives including Debate, Incubator, Marketing, Painting, and Graphic Design, and said she enjoyed all of them.

Hadya also enjoyed taking multiple electives, and her favorite was Ceramics.

“I liked the process of making things with clay. Also, the class was just really fun and I learned a lot of things,” Hadya said.
