March is reading month might be past, but Novi High School book lovers were offered a treat last week from April 24-26 as the Media Center weeded fiction books from their collection. Early on Wednesday, librarian Bethany Bratney informed the school through email that books removed from the collection would be offered “ to students and staff for free!”
“While they are definitely not the newest, hottest titles, they still have value to enthusiastic readers, classroom libraries, etc.,” Bratney said in the school-wide email.
Students were allowed to take any amount of books they wanted from the offering–a modestly sized cart full of worn classics and cult titles alike. Notable inclusions were library-bindings of fun mysteries like Peter Abraham’s Echo Falls series and an assorted collection of work by famous American author and activist Jack London.
After students chose their books, library staff removed security from the materials and sent a friendly reminder email to pick them up. Throughout the day students could be seen carrying stacks of books–all smiles–carrying the spirit of reading forward through April. If you missed this round of books, look out for a similar opportunity next year!
