One year later, memories of the tragic events at Michigan State University remain fresh in our minds. On Feb. 13, 2023, a gunman shot and killed three students and injured five in two buildings on the campus. In rememberance, green and white lights lit Beaumont Tower on Feb. 12, and memorial vigils will be held on Feb. 13.
“It’s pretty sad how often things like this happen, those children don’t deserve to experience these kinds of things. No one does,” said Novi junior Blake Goudy.
The shooting sparked public outcry, with many calling for stricter laws and security. Among the protesters was, 21-year-old MSU student Jackie Matthews, who just over a decade before, survived the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. In an online statement, Matthews stated, “We can no longer allow this to happen. We can no longer be complacent.”
In response to the tragedy, new gun laws were signed and take effect Feb. 12. These include universal background checks, required gun locks or storage devices and red flag laws.
